Since 2019 Bernie O’Reilly and Maud Hendricks have engaged in D-Project, connecting art, activism and journalism, by bringing precarious art works from genuine geographic shadow zones live to an on-line international audience. D-Project is an experiment to connect grassroots art from these different geographic spaces into one locus. In 2020 as part of Dublin Theatre Festival Bernie and Maud performed D-Project R&D co-created with three independent artists in Dublin, Evgeny Shtorn, New York, Kate Conroy and Palestine, Mirna Bamieh. The artists' work responds to their soil and the subject of precariousness.
In D-Project Ctnd. Outlandish Theatre continues to research the collecting of international art works performatively through our locus, an independent art broadcaster, mediated by Bernie and Maud, two performers who struggle to be independent. This time we are digging deeper, seeking the performative limitations of this locus. When the hierarchy of news reporting is so blurred by the extensive means and networks of media broadcasting, can true independence be reached through theatre? How are the geographical landscapes impacting on the audience landscape in different places live and on-line and who is not included in the audience, yet affected by the subjects brought forward by the artists? The locus is hovering between the geographical spaces. The artists are citizen journalists. Can we activate the audience?
D-Project is kindly supported by the Arts Council (Ireland), Dublin City Council and Dublin UNESCO City of Literature.
