F r e e d o m | Performance Intervention

A performance intervention inspired by Antigone

F r e e d o m is an artistic act of solidarity with those the Kings don’t care about.

Inspired by Antigone, this one-off experimental performance intervention explores what an act of defiance against the Kings looks like today.

Three international artists, Iman Aoun (Ashtar Theatre, Ramallah, Palestine), Haider Al Timimi (Theater Antigone, Kortrijk, Belgium), and Maud Hendricks (Outlandish Theatre, Dublin, Ireland), each working at a different proximity to Gaza, ask how does an artist’s contextual distance shape their work in relation to Gaza, freedom, and truth-speaking?

An original chorus of nine Ireland-based performers are joined by 35 new chorus members who meet and perform in a single afternoon. Together they respond to Antigone [the archetypal artist] and The Kings [the global powers] from a Global North and European perspective, creating a loud response to current violence.

The intervention was followed by a post-show response.

This event, supported by The Department of Drama, School of Creative Arts, Trinity College Dublin continued Outlandish Theatre’s nine-month exploration of the existential theme Freedom, as part of Open Theatre Practice Season IX.
